Mauritius received roughly 1.44 million visitors in 2025, according to Statistics Mauritius. Almost every one of them needed a transfer from the airport, a car for a few days, or a tour fitted around the weather and the hotel they had booked. That demand arrives the way it always has: as a WhatsApp message to a small operator who answers it personally.

That works beautifully at ten enquiries a day. Then the season starts, and the same person who comfortably handled ten is handling sixty, while standing in the arrivals hall with a customer waiting.

This is written for owners of car rental companies, transfer services and tour operators in Mauritius who already run on WhatsApp and want to fix the part that breaks first. If your business is a different shape, the wider version is here: WhatsApp for a Mauritian business.

Why bookings break earlier than a normal shop

A shop can answer a message tomorrow and still make the sale. A rental or a tour has a deadline attached to it, and the deadline is usually the customer's flight.

  • The customer messages several operators at once. They book with whoever replies first with a clear price. Being second with a better vehicle changes nothing.
  • The details are specific and date-bound. Pickup date and time, flight number, hotel or terminal, vehicle class, passengers, child seats, driving licence.
  • The season concentrates the work. The system has to hold up on your worst week, not your average one.

The three failures that quietly cost bookings

1. A quote goes out once and is never followed up

You send a price for a five-day rental. The customer goes quiet while they compare. Because nothing tracks the open quote, no one brings that conversation back. Follow-up is the cheapest fix on this list and the one most often missing.

2. Nothing gets written down until the end of the day

The pickup time, the flight number and the vehicle class all sit inside a chat thread. Someone retypes them into a spreadsheet that evening, from memory. That is how one car ends up promised to two customers, and how a driver is sent for a 06:40 arrival that moved to 14:00.

3. Two people, one number, no record of who replied

Every reply looks like the same business, so the customer cannot tell who they spoke to and neither can you. Nobody can say which enquiries are still open, which were answered late, or which were never touched at all.

The order to fix it in

  1. Put more than one person on the same number. A shared inbox gives each of your staff access to the conversation your customers already know, with the history attached to the customer instead of to a handset. If you are still deciding between the app and the API, that choice comes first and is written out in WhatsApp Business API vs the WhatsApp Business app.
  2. Capture the booking details when the enquiry lands. Date, time, flight, vehicle class, passengers. Written at the moment of the message, while the customer is still there to confirm them.
  3. Use approved templates for the messages you start. Confirmations, a pickup reminder the day before, driver and vehicle details on the morning. On the WhatsApp Business Platform, messages you initiate outside the customer service window must use an approved template, and the template approval guide covers how to get them approved first time.
  4. Give every open enquiry an owner. One name per thread, so a quote is either being chased or consciously dropped.

You are not rebuilding anything

Nothing here asks you to give up the number on your shopfront, your Google listing or your business card. Your customers keep messaging the same number they always have. What changes is what sits behind it: how many people can answer, where the details are stored, and whether anyone can see what is still open.

Build it in the low season, not the high one

If you are reading this mid-season, the honest advice is to measure now and migrate later. Changing how your team handles enquiries during your busiest month is the fastest way to have a good tool abandoned by February.

The useful work right now takes one evening and a spreadsheet:

  • Count the enquiries you received last week. Enquiries, not bookings.
  • Mark how many were answered more than an hour after they arrived.
  • Pick the one booking you are sure you lost, and write down what it was worth.

Compare that figure with the monthly cost of whatever you are considering. If the lost booking is smaller than the tool, wait. If it is bigger, you already have your answer and you can plan the change for the quiet weeks.

What it costs, and the local scheme worth knowing

There are two bills, and they get confused with each other. Meta charges per delivered message, priced by the recipient's country, and that rate is the same whoever you buy through. Your provider charges for the inbox, the automation and the support around it. The per-message maths is set out in WhatsApp Cloud API pricing in 2026.

The local lever is worth a look before you spend anything. The Technology and Innovation Scheme (TINS), administered by SME Mauritius, can finance a large share of an eligible technology project, with the business contributing the balance and caps applied per category. You need to hold an SME Certificate, and the paperwork takes weeks rather than days, so treat it as a way to fund next season's project rather than this month's purchase. Check the current rules and component list on the SME Mauritius site before you plan around it, because the caps and covered items are revised.

A word on platforms

If you are comparing tools, ask each one the same four questions: can several people share one number, what happens to a conversation when nobody assigns it, does it keep the customer's details with the customer, and who answers when something breaks at 20:00 on a Saturday. The answers sort the options faster than a feature list, and the wider checklist is in choosing a WhatsApp automation platform.

I am Mani. I build web applications, and BNex is the WhatsApp suite I work on: a shared inbox, contacts and campaigns on a verified WhatsApp number, built on Meta's official Cloud API. If you run rentals or tours and want to see what that looks like for your workflow, start with the BNex shared inbox guide.

If you would rather just have an opinion on your own numbers, message me on WhatsApp at wa.me/917358722745 and tell me how enquiries reach you today. I will tell you honestly whether you need anything new yet.
